Airport-site fill 71% complete; project has hauled 17,731 loads and could add about 8 acres

Board members received an update on earthwork at the Blairsville Airport site. Brett Owenby said he had spoken with AIS's Tadd Swartz and reported that 17,731 loads of rock and dirt have been hauled so far; he told the board the job is about 71% complete and should be finished by the beginning of May.
Owenby said the timing and placement of fill will increase usable acreage: "Where it is being filled now the county will gain about 8 acres," and he added that if the City of Blairsville obtains a permit to bring additional fill, a large slope could be removed and even more land gained between the Development Authority lot and the city-owned airport property. The board did not vote on additional fill at the meeting; staff will continue coordination with AIS and the city.
