Council asks staff to research larger public-notice signs after complaints about visibility

Councilwoman Frank asked staff to examine whether the city’s public-notice posting size and posting procedures should match Sarasota County’s larger yard-sign requirement (3 feet by 2 feet) to improve visibility. Planning and Zoning Director Roger Clark explained current practice: the city prints and laminates 11x17 notices with metal posts and installs them; a move to larger signs would require different laminating and mounting equipment, weatherproofing and would increase costs unless those costs were passed to applicants.
The city attorney cautioned about SB 180 constraints that may limit regulatory changes impacting applicants and said staff can review whether a policy change or code amendment is needed. Council directed staff to research posting requirements and return with recommended language, cost estimates and an assessment of whether the change requires a code amendment or can be implemented as policy.
