Historic board reports growth in local register, proposes surveys and online resources

Mark BB, chair of the Historic & Architectural Preservation Board, presented the board’s annual report and 2026 priorities, reporting outreach efforts and an increase in registered properties from seven in 2017 to 14 now. The board described a community forum that drew more than 50 attendees, production of a brochure to explain the board’s work, work on the Legacy Award and plans for targeted historic resource surveys in Gulf View, Seaboard, Edgewood and Gulf Shores/Golden Beach areas.
The board also described a new pre-application meeting process intended to reduce repeated review cycles and improve applicant experience, and said it will pursue making the historic color palette available online. Mark BB acknowledged limits posed by SB 180 that constrain local authority over some historic properties and indicated some items may await legislative change before action.
