Fire chief says fleet modernized, grants and reimbursements will fund more fuels work

Chief Matt Peterson presented the Fire District's five-year operational review, saying the fleet average model year improved from 1980 to 2009 since he took over leadership and that grant funds and wildland reimbursements helped purchase vehicles and equipment.
Peterson told commissioners the district's funded staffing is approximately 18 positions plus seasonals, and described how the reduction in state inmate crews has required Elko County to fill gaps with county resources. He said the district expects about $1,300,000 in reimbursable work from NV Energy in 2026 and that approximately $6,000,000 from the U.S. Forest Service and the Nevada Division of Forestry has been allocated for fuels projects in Elko County across coming years.
Commissioners praised the district's progress and moved to approve the five-year review; the motion carried by voice vote.
