Council adopts county mitigation strategy and floodplain reports; city retains CRS rating benefits

Christina Rhymes, the city’s certified floodplain manager, presented the floodplain management annual report, the Sarasota County Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) and the Unified Program for Public Information including the flood insurance promotion plan. Rhymes said the community rating system (CRS) is a voluntary program that requires higher local standards and, in return, provides residents a 25% discount on flood insurance premiums if the community meets program requirements.
Rhymes explained the purpose of the LMS as an all-hazards framework used to secure state and federal mitigation grant funding and said the local floodplain management annual report ensures required actions are effective; the documents were approved by county and state bodies earlier this year and council voted unanimously to adopt them for Venice. The full five-year update to the floodplain plan will be due in fall 2026, Rhymes said.
