Health advocates press committee to push VHC Health on LGBTQIA+ access and transparency

Amy Killay, health policy adviser for Equality Arlington, urged the advisory committee to press VHC Health to be more transparent about culturally competent and gender-affirming care. "There's really not very much, transparency, or any really transparency in terms of outward facing material, website pages, engagement from VHC Health with regard to provision of equitable nondiscriminatory care for our community," Killay said during public comment.
Killay said many LGBTQ residents seek care outside the county because of inconsistent cultural competency at local providers and noted particular concern about access to gender-affirming care for transgender residents. She recommended the county and advisory committee engage VHC Health, asked to be included in the 2026 community health needs assessment process, and said Equality Arlington would follow up in writing with data points and suggested actions.
Committee members responded by directing the Health & Wellness subcommittee to explore options for maintaining a public resource list or scorecard of providers who pledge cultural competency and to schedule a standup meeting to plan outreach to VHC Health. Chair Samantha said the committee would seek to identify what official avenues of contact exist with VHC Health and coordinate with staff to request a dialogue with the hospital system.
