Equality Arlington urges county, advisory panel to organize annual 'Arlington Bridal' pride event

Kellen Macbeth, president of Equality Arlington, asked the Arlington County LGBTQIA+ advisory committee to help the county plan and organize an annual "Arlington Bridal" pride event and offered his group's help during the first years to ensure the event's success. "Equality Arlington would like to propose that the Arlington County managers, LGBTQIA plus advisory committee plan and organize an annual bridal event," Macbeth said during public comment.

Macbeth told the committee the block-party planning group aimed for a June date this year but stopped planning when key logistical supports could not be secured, including a nonprofit partner able to act as a 501(c)(3) pass-through for donations. He gave a working budget estimate of about $35,000 for a scaled event and said the timeframe mattered: "If they started in January, we would have been absolutely fine," he said, describing permitting and vendor booking as barriers to a June timeline.

Committee members discussed whether the advisory panel should directly run events or act as liaison and advisor to a county-led effort. Michael Castellano, chair of the Policy & Equity subcommittee, said the advisory group's core role is to provide recommendations to the county manager and that event planning that includes fundraising could require a 501(c)(3) pass-through; other members suggested the county could act as a sponsor. Chair Samantha said the group would convene a small task force/huddle after mid-September to develop a shape for planning and to identify whether the committee should recommend a standing task force or a subcommittee role.

Next steps: Equality Arlington will follow up in writing with details and contacts; the committee plans a planning huddle to identify a funding pass-through or county sponsorship and to prepare formal recommendations to the county manager and county board.
