Boys & Girls Club presents new event center; commission approves $1 million for Phase 1 design

"The rec center is finally coming to completion. So we're gonna open that on January 29," Barr said, and described the event center as a multi‑use facility with gymnasiums, courts and a running track designed for both events and daily community use.
Barr said the project is broken into phases and that the agreement with the county allows the club to draw the first million for design work once funds are secured. "In our agreement, you agreed that the first million I could use for my design," he said. Commissioners discussed project oversight, parking needs and a possible 40‑acre expansion of an adjacent site; staff said the county will require separate accounting for event center funds and that the club must demonstrate additional financing before receiving subsequent disbursements.
Commissioner (speaker 6) moved to approve the initial $1,000,000 payment for Phase 1; the motion was seconded and passed on a voice vote. The board directed staff to receive regular reports from the club and return with final schematics when they are complete. Barr said he would return to the commission with large display boards showing final plans in a follow‑up meeting.
