Fire Chief Dusty told the Morton County Commissioners on May 20 that the Emergency Management pickup suffered a hole in its transmission pan while working the wildland fire, which drained all the transmission fluid and left the vehicle in need of significant repairs.
"It got a hole in the transmission pan and drained all the transmission fluid out while working the fire," Dusty said. The cost for repairs is about $10,000, Dusty reported, and County Clerk Gina Shores said she will turn the claim into KCAMP insurance. Dusty also said he is preparing a bill for the U.S. Forest Service to seek reimbursement for some fire-related costs.
County Attorney David Thompson requested a post-operation report to support insurance and reimbursement efforts; the report was not yet recorded in the meeting minutes. Commissioners discussed response logistics, including several trucks and dozers that became stuck during the incident and temporary solutions used to keep equipment operational.
