The Board discussed changes to the Commissioner scholarship program after the 2026 budget allocated $5,000—down from $10,000 previously approved in 2024 and 2025. County Administrator Darin Myers said commissioners proposed narrowing eligibility to children of Ellis County employees as a recruitment and retention measure. Under the proposal, eligible applicants who meet criteria would receive $1,000 each; if fewer qualified applicants are received, only those qualifying would be awarded funds.
Myers identified a review panel for 2026 composed of Jennifer Taylor (Human Resources), Scott Brown (Sheriff) and Melissa Miller (Health). Commissioners agreed to keep the $1,000 award level and to roll over unspent funds if no qualified applicants are received in a given year. Citizen Mike Werth offered brief comment during the discussion.
