Clay County approves $10,000 donation to CCARE shelter for 2026

At the April 13 meeting, the Board of Clay County Commissioners approved a $10,000 donation from the County General Fund to CCARE for 2026. John Rieb, Shelter Manager, presented the shelter's 2025 intake figures: 110 dogs total, with 49 adopted, 55 reclaimed, 5 transferred, and 1 death in care.
CCARE President Janel Michaud and other shelter representatives asked for the county donation to increase from $8,000 to $10,000 and proposed a 2.5% annual increase beginning in 2027 to account for inflation. Commissioner Mayo moved to donate $10,000 for 2026; Commissioner Carlson seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Shelter staff said adopters come to Clay Center from across Kansas and other states and requested additional volunteers to support operations.
The Board recorded the donation approval in the minutes; no long-term commitment or future payment schedule was adopted at the meeting.
