Group TANK asks council to pilot community connection box to provide basics and information

Representatives of TANK (Transformative Action for North Kingstown) asked the council for permission to install a pilot community connection box on town property during public comment.
"Rather than a project that lasts only one day, we wanted to create something that would provide a lasting benefit for the community," said Jennifer Lima, who requested council support. She described the box as weather-resistant and modest in size, to be stocked with shelf-stable food, hygiene supplies, and resource information; volunteers would monitor and restock twice weekly.
Maya Lima, who identified herself as both a TANK member and a master's of social work student and an out-of-school-time coordinator in the North Kingstown School Department, said the boxes reduce stigma and provide immediate supports while residents wait for formal services. Both speakers asked the council to allow the box as a pilot and said TANK would coordinate with town staff on installation and maintenance when the item is scheduled on the council agenda.
