Police: Ruston Way will remain open after fireworks; Tacoma to handle traffic control

At the July 1 City Council meeting, Police Chief Nestor Bautista told the council that "Ruston Way will remain open following the fireworks presentation to assist with event traffic flow." He also said the Ruston Police Department "will not provide traffic control as in prior years due to operational burden and safety concerns."
Chief Bautista said Tacoma Police will provide on-scene traffic control for the holiday event and that Ruston officers will be staged with lights on and on standby if needed. Councilmember Jim Hedrick thanked the chief for coordinating with the event organizer to reduce congestion and for working to protect public safety during a busy weekend.
The council heard that the event organizer will attempt to route departing traffic through South Pearl. No formal council action was taken at the meeting; council members discussed logistics and coordination between agencies ahead of the holiday.
