Ruston police: July 4 congestion taxed resources; automated camera metrics under review

Ruston Police Chief Bautista updated the council on July 4 event impacts, automated camera data and staffing. He said he sent a letter to Parks Tacoma about closing certain roads to allow traffic to filter along Ruston Way and that a gun-related incident during the event required SWAT assistance. "Traffic delays lasted between 1.5 to 2 hours," Bautista said, adding that the department did not provide traffic control because it would have placed an undue burden on the City.
Bautista reported the vendor's recent study of Stack Hill and northbound Pearl Street showed increased numbers for the automated traffic-camera program but cautioned that the metrics "require further review." He also described staffing changes: Lt. Ashcraft plans to resign due to relocation, Officer Barlow is on light duty for pregnancy, and the department is considering converting a part-time officer to full-time and using the reserve academy to supplement staffing.
