Resident urges commissioners to prioritize transparency, accountability

Dan Desjernay, a resident who said he moved to Troup County in 2012 and is a retired Coca-Cola executive, told the board the county should do more to communicate and to act as advocates for residents.
"If people don't have information from you, they'll create their own information," Desjernay said, urging commissioners to involve and empower citizens and to practice "servant leadership". He told the board that perception becomes reality and that better outreach would reduce community stress around issues such as taxes and abatements.
Desjernay framed his remarks around the county's strategic priorities and urged commissioners to remember their role as representatives: he said seniors and residents on fixed incomes feel especially vulnerable at tax time. The chair thanked Desjernay for his presentation and the board moved on to the next agenda item.
