Troup County to pursue agreement with school board to convert Tatum School to prototype fire station

County Manager Moseley asked the board to authorize continued negotiations on an agreement with the Troup County Board of Education to convert the former Tatum School site into a new fire station that would serve unincorporated areas and improve coverage. Moseley told commissioners the project is budgeted in SPLOST 5 and would include a perpetual easement allowing bus access and storage for up to 15 buses.
Moseley said the facility is intended as the first of several prototype fire stations to lower response times and reduce homeowners' insurance ratings in outlying areas. He asked the board to authorize staff to work with the school board to finalize the contract. "This new fire station, which is at the old Tatum School off of Roanoke Road, will serve that purpose," Moseley said. The board voted to authorize staff to continue negotiations and prepare a final contract for a future meeting.
Why it matters: relocating a station and adding coverage can lower ISO ratings for residents and change local emergency-response capacity; the proposed use also includes an easement for school-bus storage, which staff said would improve operational logistics for the school system.
