Zoning panel declines to pursue flat-roof boathouse rule change after enforcement concerns

The Iron County Comprehensive Planning/Land & Zoning Committee discussed whether to allow flat-roof boathouses on county lakes and ultimately decided not to pursue a change to the county ordinance.
Zoning Department Administrator Erika Roeder told the committee that lake associations were roughly split on the proposal and urged caution about long-term enforcement, asking, “what happens in 5 years when this turns into neighbors complaining about parties etc….” Committee member Rick Boes said enforcement would fall to local towns if conflicts arose. Members cited concerns about increased impervious surface, long-term monitoring burdens for county staff and the risk of creating new land-use disputes. The committee’s position was to leave the county ordinance unchanged at this time, and no amendment was forwarded for drafting or vote.
