Public works recommends replacing 1999 truck and upgrading shop lift for safety
Summary
Public works presented quotes for replacing a 1999 Ford F-250 (recommendation: new 2025 Toyota Tacoma) and recommended replacing a 15,000-lb shop lift with a 30,000-lb drive-on lift citing safety concerns and on-site evaluation by the recommended vendor.

Public works staff presented two capital-equipment recommendations at Tuesday's work session: replace an aging 1999 Ford F-250 used for parts and light duties, and replace the county shop's aging lift that can no longer safely service modern heavy vehicles.
Glenn Downs (speaker 11) said vendor quotes for the pickup ran from roughly $38,000 to $44,000 and recommended a 2025 Toyota Tacoma for longevity and warranty coverage. On shop equipment, staff presented photos and measurements showing the current 15,000-pound lift is insufficient for newer heavy trucks; staff recommended a 30,000-pound drive-on lift with rail-mounted mobile jacks to eliminate safety hazards. "My biggest concern is the safety of our employees," Downs said while describing the current lift's limitations. Commissioners asked about warranties, trade-in value and funding sources; staff said the lift would come from capital funds and the truck from available vehicle budgets.
Why it matters: the recommended lift upgrade addresses an immediate employee-safety problem and ensures the county can service heavier modern vehicles; the vehicle replacement addresses reliability for daily duties.
Next steps: staff will prepare formal procurement documents and pricing details for board action.
