The LaPorte County Plan Commission unanimously approved a zoning map amendment for 1.878 acres at 7042 West 400 North, Michigan City, changing the parcel from R1B to B2. Attorney David L. Ambers presented the petition on behalf of Jeremy and Jennifer Watson and Sandra Johnson and cited surrounding commercial zoning and traffic counts from the INDOT website (reported at roughly 8,400–8,900 vehicles per day) as support for the change.
Petitioner Jennifer Watson said she and the landowners are "shooting for" a gas station and noted site advantages including a turning lane and 360 feet of road frontage. Commissioners asked about utilities, septic needs, lighting restrictions adjacent to R1 zones, and buffering; staff and counsel noted that any development would still need to meet county ordinance requirements and follow permitting processes. The motion to approve was made by Steve Holifield, seconded by John Carr, and carried 9–0.
