Parks Superintendent Chad Kuzontkoski told the Suffield Conservation Commission that Sunrise Park is experiencing an algae bloom and recommended treating the pond and testing the water before reopening it for swimming.
Commissioners agreed to the plan and voted to have the water tested prior to chemical treatment, to authorize payment for a one‑ to two‑day testing option estimated at $588, and to restrict swimming until test results were received. Commissioner Ray Wilcox moved the measure and Commissioner Norm John Noble seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Kuzontkoski said he would contact the Health Department and the testing laboratory for guidance on testing requirements, swimming restrictions, and potential residual toxins. The Commission also received an offer from Norm Cheever of the Southwick Conservation Commission to provide Southwick’s algae protocol for the Congamond Lakes.
The Commission did not set a target date to reopen the pond; that decision will depend on test results and any Health Department guidance.
