City reviews polycentric plan to link transit, downtown and recreation nodes

Patrick O'Brien and consultants from MHTN presented a draft polycentric plan on Feb. 3 that identifies six focal nodes for future growth — Transit, Commercial, Downtown, East Gateway, Employment and Recreation — and sets goals for multimodal connections and mixed‑use destinations. "The FrontRunner is a great asset but is disconnected," consultant Mehrnaz Fereydouni said as the team described short‑ and long‑term transit scenarios and circulator options to improve local access.
Presenters emphasized community input collected since July and said the study will evaluate ridership, costs, funding and operations before producing a final circulatory strategy. Ryan Wallace highlighted active‑transportation opportunities, saying the plan identifies "an opportunity for an active transportation system throughout the city" including a potential Shore‑to‑Summit connection from the Recreation Node to downtown; staff said they will pursue grants to help build the network. The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on related items the following evening.
