Police and fire chiefs report heavy June and busy Fourth of July response

Police Chief Jeff Palmer told the council that, since the last meeting, the department responded to 1,257 calls for service, conducted 556 proactive activities/stops, made 42 misdemeanor arrests, 6 felony arrests and issued 38 citations.
"During the Fourth of July (6:00 p.m. - 3:00 a.m.): Responded to 103 calls for service. Transported five arrestees to the Madera County Department of Corrections," Palmer reported. The chief described the holiday period as busy but without major incidents requiring expanded mutual aid.
Fire Chief Fred Gaumnitz reported June operational totals: "109 calls for service. 119 individual responses. 7 vegetation fires. 2 structure fires. 4 vehicle fires. 2 hazardous situations. 72 medical calls (including trauma incidents)." He thanked Police Department enforcement of illegal fireworks and noted that the department has added four volunteers this year and has two more recruits in background checks. Gaumnitz said the Local Hazard Mitigation Plan should be completed within the next month or two.
Both chiefs emphasized that summer events (Music in the Park, Movies in the Park) keep departments busy and that coordination among departments and volunteers was important for public safety during peak holiday weekends.
