Wickford advisory committee: short‑term rentals not a townwide crisis, but pockets of concern

Rob Zimmer, speaking for the Wickford Advisory Committee, told the council the committee conducted three forums over three years to gather input on village life and short‑term rentals (STRs). He said the committee’s October 2025 forum was designed to hear directly from residents, STR owners and others about how STR growth affects the village.
Amy Jenner summarized the meeting’s key findings: "There are approximately 120 registered STRs townwide," she said, and owner‑occupied STRs were repeatedly cited as easier to manage because owners are on site. Residents reported greater disruption from larger, absentee‑owned STRs with big yards near the water. Jenner also noted that state lead‑paint testing applies to long‑term rentals but not to short‑term rentals, and some owners are converting units to STRs to avoid that regulation.
Town staff (Director Nicole LaFontaine) and the committee recommended the council review the committee’s full report (provided in council packets) and consider whether additional policy changes or referrals to state legislators are warranted. The council asked staff to post the committee’s full deck online for public review.
