District reports ELOP summer program expanded projects, volunteer pipeline

Director Faubert presented an overview of the district’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) summer program at the Sept. 18 meeting, describing it as a student‑led, project‑based STEM program offered all day at three sites.
Faubert said ELOP focuses on active engaged learning, youth voice and leadership, and diversity, access and equity; staff ran projects that included circuitry, chess clubs and virtual field trips, and a showcase at the end of summer. The program relied on high‑school volunteers, some of whom returned as summer employees. Faubert noted staffing and retention are ongoing challenges and described professional development and coordinator support to train and retain ELOP staff.
Trustees asked questions about program sites and staffing. Faubert said the program had strong student engagement and highlighted partnerships — for example, visits from the fire department and a mobile star lab — and recommended continuing incentives and volunteer recruitment practices.
