Cortez Elementary students present PAWS program, highlight test score gains

Students from Cortez Elementary described their schoolwide positive-behavior system and highlighted recent test-score gains at the Lammersville Joint Unified School District board meeting.
"PAWS stands for practice kindness, act responsibly, work and play safely, and show respect," a student presenter said, explaining that students earn tickets they can spend at a newly established PAWS store. The student described MAP testing as a tool used to place students in interventions or electives and said the school’s theme this year is "embrace, empower, and excel." The presenter cited specific CAASPP averages: schoolwide 84% overall, math 84% (district average 69%), English 85% (district 74%), and science 75% (district 61%).
Trustees responded positively. One trustee said in the meeting that in nearly a decade on the board they had not heard students "champion MAP testing and why it's valuable," calling the presentation "fantastic." Principal Darren McDonald introduced the student leaders and thanked them for the update. The appearance gave the board concrete student-facing examples of a behavior and assessment approach the district is using.
