PCPSA adopts hydrant inspection policy; will pay volunteer fire departments $85 per hydrant

The PCPSA board approved a draft Fire Hydrant Use, Inspection, and Maintenance Policy with an amendment specifying a five-year minimum interval for flow testing. Mark Vernon outlined coordination with county maintenance and local volunteer fire departments after county staffing constraints limited maintenance capacity.
Under the arrangement Patrick Springs Fire will inspect 58 hydrants in its district and Stuart Fire will inspect three hydrants in its district. The county administrator approved funding at $85 per hydrant for performance of all inspection checklist tasks (excluding flow testing); PCPSA will supply tools, equipment and any follow-up materials (paint, gaskets, parts). Vernon said inspections are anticipated to begin in early spring 2026 and will be scheduled as departments can allocate time.
