City Administrator David Bunker and staff briefed council on the status of the city’s fiber public–private partnership and next steps for materials already procured by the city.
Bunker said the private–public partnership began last year with agreements with CentraCom and Strata. "Strata has indicated they are not in a position to move forward now, and when CentraCom was approached they indicated they are ready to move forward," Bunker said. Staff told the council they would meet with CentraCom to discuss priorities and what to do with fiber materials the city has already purchased.
Council members raised concerns about whether multiple telecoms installing fiber would result in repeated street cuts and urged staff to examine options that would reduce disruption (including potential coordination of installations or an open-access network model). No final direction was given; staff were asked to report back after meeting with CentraCom and to include options for material disposition and a plan to minimize repeated pavement impacts.
