Pawnee County approves $13,800 subsidy to Welcome Inn to cover cook's salary

Representatives of the Welcome Inn (Sonia Carson, Julie Ford and Lee Gilcris) asked Pawnee County commissioners March 9 for help finding a transportation van and for support covering staff costs. The board approved a $13,800 subsidy from the county's 1% Health and Safety fund to cover the cook’s salary for this year; the motion by Commissioner Burdett, seconded by Commissioner Miller, passed 3-0.
The group discussed a listing for a 1997 van with a wheelchair lift in McPherson; commissioners advised they should keep looking for a more suitable vehicle. Clerk Rein and Scott Turner (Road/Bridge Administrative Assistant) were present for the discussion. Commissioners also noted continued struggles by Welcome Inn with funding and reporting requirements and clarified that the allocation is intended to cover this year’s salary only.
Clerk Rein later briefed commissioners on the federal 5310 program, which provides capital and operating reimbursement to nonprofits and local governments for transportation for elderly and persons with disabilities. Scott Turner explained the county stopped using the 5310 program because staff were reluctant to attend required training and complete reporting hours.
