Commissioners approve MDU floodplain variance for Poplar substation upgrade at 5301 EPU 1 Drive

Montana-Dakota Utilities (MDU) submitted a floodplain application and variance for an equipment upgrade at an existing substation at 5301 EPU 1 Drive in Poplar, and the Roosevelt County commissioners approved the variance at a special meeting on July 29.
MDU representatives and consultants told the board the project would be a slab-mounted equipment upgrade (not a building) and that the work would not raise base flood elevations. In response to a question from county media attendee Bill Juve the project team clarified that the installation would be equipment on a slab, similar to the existing electrical substation east of Poplar.
Commissioner Robert Toavs moved to approve the floodplain application and variance; Commissioner Doug Marottek seconded and the motion passed per the meeting record. The file and variance approval are recorded in the minutes and provide the county’s authorization for the work as described in the application.
