Commissioners decline to set hearing on Veterans Boulevard speed reduction amid safety concerns

Doherty said staff’s 85th‑percentile measurements showed operating speeds higher than the posted limit, and he argued that median improvements and completion of right‑turn lanes should be prioritized before reducing the posted limit.
The debate stretched across several commissioners’ remarks. Commissioner Deutsch said lowering the limit without enforcement could put slower drivers in the left lane and “create more accidents.” Commissioner Constance favored a public hearing to hear expert testimony and public input; Commissioner Doherty instead moved that the board not set a public hearing and instead direct staff to study median modifications and right‑turn lane completion. The motion to not set the hearing passed 3–2. Commissioners on both sides asked staff to work on a recommended package of median/turn modifications and to revisit speed limit setting if those engineering changes warrant it.
