"We haven't told the public the decision rules, the weighting, the sequencing, the academic thresholds," Board Member Harvey told Superintendent Barry, asking staff to publish a simple, defensible explanation of how the district moved from many datasets to three proposed models. Superintendent Barry responded that staff will "put that in writing" and produce a public-facing presentation that explains the sequencing and the thinking behind the models.
Board members asked for several specific clarifications: a public map that shows which schools would be affected and how; clearly stated readiness gates for any move (facility readiness, staffing and transportation); and an explanation of how community input and external partners were weighed against quantitative indicators. "We need it in a presentation that everyone will understand in simple steps," one board member said.
Staff said the district will publish an interactive dashboard and add map layers showing impacted schools and options. The district also confirmed two near-term engagement steps: a student survey planned for Aug. 24 and a recommendation to the board that will be released at the Aug. 25 meeting with a goal of final board action later in September.
Why this matters: Board members said residents are being asked to trust the district with major decisions that change neighborhoods and can result in school closures. The board requested documentation that families can read and use to evaluate trade-offs before any final vote. The board also flagged gifted and specialized programs as issues that must be explicitly evaluated inside the methodology rather than deferred to later phases.
Next steps: Staff committed to publishing the interactive Power BI dashboard and an explanatory methodology document in the coming days and to returning to the board with more detailed readiness criteria tied to each model.
