USFS presents Austin Project to Grant County Court; public comments taken and plan comment period extended

Representatives from the Malheur National Forest and Blue Mountain Ranger District presented the Austin Project to the Grant County Court on Feb. 18. The slide presentation described objectives to enhance wildfire resilience and watershed health, economic projections for job creation and income generation, plans to monitor and limit environmental effects from temporary road use, and a notation that wild horse populations in the area may require management.
The presenters said the upcoming forest plan draft will allow public comments and that the comment period was extended until March 19. Local residents Billie Jo George and Louis Provencher offered comments during the meeting. No formal action or vote on the Austin Project was taken by the Court at this session; the presentation was informational and the Court recorded the public remarks.
