County engineer outlines bridge redesign, new overweight-permit rules and $185,000 rise in Road Use Tax estimate

County Engineer Ryne Thornburg updated the Board on multiple secondary‑roads issues on Dec. 9. He said the Board had previously rejected all bids for the 210th bridge because they greatly exceeded the engineer’s estimate; new short‑span bridge standards scheduled for release in July will allow redesign without a custom bridge and the project will be revised and re‑let under those standards.
Thornburg also explained legislation effective July 1, 2025, creating an all‑systems all‑size/overweight permit that would require permits for travel on paved Farm‑to‑Market roads; he said some segments might be eligible for exemption and that he will pursue exemptions for Croton Road, V64 south of Douds, and Bridge Street in Selma. He reported a County Farm core showed minimal overburden and good‑quality limestone, noted the estimated Road Use Tax funds are $185,000 higher than last fiscal year for budgeting, and reminded the board of a Highway 1 closure with an Iowa DOT detour agreement in place.
