Pawnee County wins $905,000 HRRR grant for E Road improvements

Kurt Demel, Road/Bridge/Noxious Weed/Zoning Department Head, told commissioners the grant will fund construction of 24-inch aggregate shoulders and flattening of foreslops where possible. Demel said the county must complete Form 1302 prior to April 15, 2026, to accept the award. He also presented an equipment replacement schedule and a John Deere quote for purchasing the county's current rental tractor, including warranty options.
Demel described coordination between Road/Bridge and the Fire Department — including a recent tire repair — and provided routine road and mowing updates. Commissioners discussed options for purchasing versus continuing to rent the tractor and the potential long-term costs of older used equipment.
Next steps: Road/Bridge staff will complete Form 1302 by the April 15 deadline and return with a recommendation on the rental tractor purchase and warranty terms.
