Mona Council approves part-time communication coordinator to boost outreach

The Mona City Council voted July 22 to approve hiring recommendations for a part-time Communication Coordinator intended to improve resident access to accurate information about city affairs.
Mayor Troy Painter said the position was proposed after "many citizens have expressed difficulty finding information about what is happening in the City." Councilmember Alesha Newton described the proposed role as handling social media and other communication outlets; Mayor Painter and Emergency Coordinator Chris Nelson said the role would function similarly to a Public Information Officer to distribute timely, factual updates.
The position is proposed to be up to five hours per week and include maintaining Facebook and Instagram posts and other outreach tools. The Council discussed additional outreach ideas such as Facebook Live and posting video recordings of meetings so residents can review discussions directly. Joshua Davis suggested using the position "to help build a positive public image of the Council," and Tiffanie McAfee cautioned that differing opinions would persist online even with an official communications role.
Councilmember Kris Kay motioned for the hiring recommendations; Councilmember Kevin Squire seconded. The roll call vote recorded Councilmembers Ingram, Kay, Newton, Openshaw and Squire as "Aye." The Council said it will try the position for a few months to evaluate effectiveness and use it to promote holidays and community celebrations.
