Van Buren County adopts bridge embargos after inspections; County Engineer reports quarry output

County Engineer Ryne Thornburg updated the board on secondary roads work and recommended load postings based on the 2024 bridge inspection and appraisal work by Kirkham Michael & Associates. The Board approved Resolution #01-02-2025F to establish vehicle and load limits and post signage on affected county bridges under authority of Iowa statutes (Roll Call: Meek Aye; Waugh Aye; House Aye).
Thornburg also reported operations updates: the contractor doing cores at the county farm plans to return the week of Jan. 6 (weather permitting); flashing beacons funded by the Traffic Control Devices Grant have been installed at several intersections; and preliminary quarry production estimates included about 176,000 tons of roadstone, 5,600 tons of 1¼" stone, 3,000 tons of rip rap and 5,000 tons of gabion stone. He estimated the current quarry location could last roughly 30 more years.
