Surry County wins NACo award for broadband; staff preview commercials and July 4 events

County Administrator Melissa Rollins announced at the July 2 meeting that Surry County received a National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for its broadband project, acknowledging partners including Prince George Electric Co‑op, RuralBand and Dominion. Economic development staff previewed two new television commercials promoting "1st Fridays on the Lawn" and other tourism events.
Rollins and staff also provided operational updates for the county's July 4 fireworks event, saying operations crews have repaired concrete and expect additional temporary parking from new blacktop at the parks and recreation center to support large attendance. Rollins praised staff for completing the county's first fiscal-year close in the new Munis financial software and highlighted a regional grant—announced by Prince George County—that will bring more than $113,000 to a mobile overdose response unit expected to benefit Surry residents.
The board and staff encouraged residents to attend community events and noted the county will issue a press release about the NACo award.
