The Surry County Board of Supervisors voted July 2 to approve a one-time 1.5% bonus to county-funded employees and a $250 lump-sum payment for permanent part-time employees. County Administrator Melissa Rollins told the board the state compensation board will reimburse roughly $18,741 of the cost for certain employees, and that the county's total cost to fund all employees under the proposal would be about $77,716.
"It was recommended that we authorize the same 1.5% bonus to all county funded employees and a $250 bonus payment to permanent part time employees," Rollins said, explaining the recommendation was intended to ensure equity across county staff. Board members debated funding sources: one member asked staff to identify budget adjustments to avoid drawing down the contingency fund for the roughly $56,692 county-only portion, while others said the contingency fund was an appropriate short-term source and asked staff to replenish it.
A motion to approve the resolution directing the county administrator to award the bonus structure was adopted by the board. Staff will report back on specific funding offsets and the plan to replace any contingency drawdown if that source is used.
