The Draper Planning Commission voted to forward a positive recommendation to city council on a city‑initiated zoning text amendment to chapter 9‑31 of the Draper Municipal Code that updates standards for accessory dwelling units (ADUs).
Todd Taylor, the staff contact, said the proposed changes would allow a property owner to occupy either the primary unit or the ADU and reduce the minimum lot size to request an IADU from 20,000 square feet to 6,000 square feet while keeping other ADU requirements in place, including providing two parking stalls (staff presentation SEG 1338–1384). "This change would just allow the owners to live in either unit," Taylor said, and noted the 50% square‑footage rule still applies so ADUs cannot exceed 50% of the main dwelling's size (staff comment SEG 1404–1406). Commissioners opened the public hearing, received no public comments, and moved to forward a positive recommendation to city council based on findings and staff criteria in the staff report dated 09/25/2024; the motion passed unanimously.
Commissioners discussed practical benefits for homeowners—such as allowing retirees to downsize into ADUs and rent the primary residence—and confirmed the amendment retains parking and other ADU safeguards.
