ABC board seeks authority to retain revenues as Bertie commissioners weigh expansion

Tim Bazemore Jr., speaking about Bertie County's ABC system, told commissioners Feb. 16 that the system is underfunded, that pay rates are below competitive levels and that staffing and retention are problems. He recommended expanding operations into the western county and asked the board to consider allowing the ABC Board to retain generated revenues for reinvestment in infrastructure and employee compensation.
Bazemore argued that keeping revenues within the ABC system would permit capital repairs and pay adjustments that could improve long-term sustainability. Chair Corey Ballance asked staff to add the matter to the March 16 work session for more detailed discussion and possible financial analysis.
