Middlesex seeks $1.5M federal earmark to upgrade public-safety radio system

Mr. Layman told the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors the county is applying for $1.5 million in FY2027 Community Project Funding to update radio-site equipment at all three county towers, add a microwave backhaul to connect Middlesex to the regional radio system, and build redundancy and infrastructure for future initiatives. He said receipt of federal funding "could eliminate or significantly reduce the amount of County funding required" for an ongoing $1.3 million CIP request and that "no local match is required."
Supervisor Wayne Jessie moved that the Board provide a letter of support for the application; Supervisor Randy Crittenden seconded, and the motion carried on a roll-call vote. County officials said the project would allow future initiatives that depend on regional connectivity and would reduce immediate demands on local capital if the federal award is granted. The county did not commit local funds in the meeting and noted that the CIP request remains active if federal funding is not awarded.
