Commission approves contract to update Taos County Hazard Mitigation Plan

County staff presented a professional services contract to update the Taos County Hazard Mitigation Plan and asked the commission to approve the contract so the update can begin.
“We have sent this contract to Homeland Security for their review, and everything has met their criteria,” said Mr. Lucero, who outlined that the work will be funded through a Homeland Security/FEMA grant and is expected to take about 12–18 months. He described planned steering‑committee participation from county planning and zoning, the town of Taos, Taos Ski Valley, Red River, Taos Pueblo and nonprofit stakeholders to ensure broad input.
Commissioners asked what hazards the plan will cover; Lucero listed dams, wildfires, avalanches, natural disasters and pandemics and said recent winter squalls would be incorporated into the risk assessment. A motion to approve the contract passed by roll call with all commissioners voting yes. Staff said they would return with progress updates and stakeholder engagement opportunities as the plan moves forward.
