Taos County approves consolidation of two rural fire districts to bolster response capacity

Chief Mike Cordova told commissioners the county is beginning a series of consolidations to strengthen volunteer staffing and response capacity across rural districts. The proposed consolidation of La Llamas and San Cristobal into Taos County Fire District 3 will centralize dispatching and enable combined paging and staffing to improve arrival times and meet ISO thresholds for funding.
"By consolidating these two districts, we'll get that number up...we'll have two main stations," Cordova said, explaining that consolidated districts can receive greater annual funding under ISO calculations and reduce delays from sequential alarm requests. Commissioners discussed volunteer recruitment and the difficulty of sustaining unpaid volunteer forces; Cordova said consolidation does not eliminate local stations or histories but reorganizes administrative structure for operational efficiency.
The commission moved and adopted the consolidation resolution by roll call.
