ESD updates Northlake station timeline, says delays tied to state licensing review
Summary
Denton County ESD briefed the Northlake Town Council on growth-driven needs, a modular 5,200‑sq‑ft station on 1.7 acres, 12 newly hired firefighters and a delayed opening while the manufacturer’s plans undergo a state review; commissioners approved extending contract coverage while the station is finalized.

Denton County ESD representatives told the Northlake Town Council that rapid growth and higher call volumes have pushed the district to build a new modular fire station and hire personnel. “We signed the documents ... so we're thinking by July this year it's gonna be open. Well, that didn't exactly happen,” the ESD spokesperson said, explaining a delay tied to state licensing and a third‑party review by Intertek.
The speaker said the modular station will be about 5,200 square feet on 1.7 acres, include two apparatus bays and the district’s first quint (an aerial ladder/engine hybrid). The ESD has hired 12 firefighters (onboarded July 19; in service Aug. 2) and temporarily stationed engines at a nearby facility until equipment and the new station are ready. The ESD also reported completing a fire‑station master plan, establishing a 180‑day reserve fund and achieving a clean first audit for its financial controls.
Council members thanked the presenter and asked about logistics, outreach and interagency coordination. The ESD representative outlined planned community events — a push‑in ceremony, a Sept. 11 blood drive and public CPR classes — and invited town staff to coordinate training with CareFlight and other first responders. Staff and council asked the ESD to keep the town apprised of the state review timeline and final delivery dates for the new apparatus.
