Menno endorses hazard-mitigation projects, recognizes volunteer firefighters and addresses RU site policy

The Menno City Council voted to include several mitigation projects in Hutchinson County's Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan. Jerry Fischer moved to include proposals such as exploring replacement of the water tower, creating a comprehensive plan, conducting homeowner outreach on winter-proofing, adding a northside warning sign, continuing participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (with training for the flood-ordinance coordinator), reviewing water-restriction ordinances, exploring the Firewise program, and implementing a formal fire-hydrant maintenance policy and standard operating procedures. The motion passed with all votes "aye."
The council also recognized Justin Edelman and Gradyn Furney as new volunteer firemen, approved surplusing a 1987 International F1954 truck for sale by online auction, and moved to discontinue accepting shingles at the RU site once the designated disposal area reaches capacity. The council discussed efforts to recruit additional ambulance EMT personnel and noted an EMT course offered in Freeman this fall with reimbursement available if the participant serves as an EMT for a designated length of time.
