Sheriff's office requests deputies, vehicles and equipment; court seeks prioritization

Under the sheriff's departmental packet, staff included requests for new positions (CID sergeant, investigator, corporal and two deputies), a large vehicle allocation and expanded law enforcement supplies for SWAT, training ammunition and radios. Commissioners discussed moving $500,000 in vehicle purchases to SP22 funds to reduce the operating-budget percentage impact.
The County Judge noted that fully funding the sheriff's requests as presented would materially increase the county's tax rate and asked the department to help distinguish wants from needs. "If we fully funded the request from the sheriff's department as it was presented, it's 2.6 on the tax rate," the County Judge said, urging prioritization and demonstration of operational impact before the court commits to large capital outlays.
Sheriff's representatives were asked to provide demonstrations (for example, showing SWAT equipment and explaining training needs), to clarify which purchases could be funded from special-purpose (SP22) funds versus the general fund, and to return with a prioritized list and cost offsets at the next workshop.
