Jail leadership told the commissioners that inmate food, medical and hygiene costs are the largest pressure points in the jail budget. "We're steadily between $7,100 and $7,600 per week in inmate food," a jail official said, adding that the annualized figure would be near $400,400 at current consumption rates.
Staff also warned that medical contract pricing may increase when the county's bid volume is reconciled with the provider's per-inmate billing model; the county currently pays a recurring monthly fee for an electronic medical-records system that adds recurring expense. Commissioners asked staff to evaluate whether indigent-health vetting and other third-party options could offset some costs before finalizing the jail budget lines.
The court discussed replacing worn radios and other jail equipment and asked for precise contract and utilization numbers to support any material increases before the final budget vote.
