Tamworth monitoring finds methane but 'not of concern'; Select Board open to winter recreation on closed landfill
Summary
Landfill monitoring in February found some methane readings "not of concern." The Select Board has tentatively approved winter recreational use (cross-country skiing, possibly sledding) of the closed landfill pending NH DES review and methane considerations.

The commission reported that Ned Beecher and a participant identified as Charlie completed landfill monitoring in February and detected some methane, which the minutes describe as "not of concern." The Select Board has said it is willing to allow winter recreational uses of the closed landfill, such as cross-country skiing and potentially sledding, and NH DES indicated conditional openness but noted concerns about methane that would need to be considered.
Commissioners discussed that the town does not expect new taxation for any associated work and that any conversion of the closed landfill for recreation will require continued monitoring and coordination with NH DES. No formal vote on a change of use was recorded at the March 9 meeting.
