Selectboard approves RFP for all-persons Tucker Mountain trail, after archaeology requirement

The Newbury Selectboard on Jan. 14 approved a Request for Proposals for construction of an all-persons access trail on Tucker Mountain, contingent on a wetlands permit and completion of an archaeological dig. Tom Kidder, chair of the Tucker Mountain Town Forest Management Committee, reported that an archaeological dig on a possible Abenaki hunting camp site will be required prior to any excavation or construction.
Kidder said the committee will “make every effort to include educational opportunities for students and the public concerning the dig” and described a project timeline that “includes breaking ground in late August and project completion in October.” The Board’s approval of the RFP was moved by Selectboard member Shauna Prime and seconded by Chair Susan Culp, contingent on required permits and the archaeology work.
Kidder also told the Board that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined the proposed bridge over Vance Brook is small enough that the Corps need not be involved. The committee reported other trail-development work is progressing and the RFP approval advances the project into procurement pending the outstanding permits and dig.
