Selectboard defers Pike Industries paving bid after cost exceeds budget by about $35,000

The New Haven Selectboard opened a single paving bid from Pike Industries on June 2 and deferred awarding the work after the price exceeded the board's budget. Pike proposed using recycled asphalt product (RAP) for South Street and Munger Street; the combined bid total was $385,114.80, about $35,114.80 higher than the $350,000 the Selectboard had budgeted for the two sections.
The Pike proposal showed South Street would be paved with a .75-inch RAP shim and a 1.25-inch wearing course over a length of 9,770 feet and width of 22 feet, requiring 2,680 tons at $96.52 per ton, for a total of $258,673.60. Munger Street was shown as 4,752 feet at the same width with 1,310 tons at $96.52 per ton, total $126,441.20. David Davio of Pike Industries told the board he would return to Pike to see whether the company could lower the cost.
Chair John Roleau said the board would defer awarding the contract until Pike returns with possible adjustments. The board did not set a new deadline during the meeting.
